Bikes Skid on Rainbow Flyovers in Kolkata, Triggering Government Probe
· Automobile · Hindustan Times, The Hindu, India Today
Freshly painted rainbow road stretches across Kolkata caused multiple motorcycles to skid, prompting safety concerns and an investigation by the West Bengal government. Viral videos showed bikes losing traction on rain-soaked surfaces at the Gariahat flyover, the Chingrighata flyover, and a section of Red Road. Urban development minister Agnimitra Paul stated that safety norms were considered during the makeover, but Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari ordered a probe into why the surfaces became slippery. Municipal authorities installed cat's eye road studs and scraped bridge surfaces to increase friction, while the Asansol administration removed paint from a local stretch as a precaution. Opposition parties and residents questioned the suitability of the paint used for driving conditions ahead of Durga Puja.
Why it matters
Commuters and motorists face daily road hazards on major city thoroughfares, forcing municipal authorities to rush emergency surface repairs and evaluate slip-resistant materials.
