Binance restarts withdrawals after $6.3bn heist

· Technology · Al Jazeera, Financial Times, The Guardian

Cryptocurrency exchange Binance has begun restoring customer withdrawals following a record $6.3bn cyberattack that United States authorities have attributed to North Korea. The platform resumed limited services on Sunday after a multi-day suspension while security checks and asset tracing were carried out. Binance stated that it has replaced approximately 95 percent of affected assets and will absorb the entire financial impact on behalf of its users. Withdrawals are returning in stages, beginning with major digital assets like Bitcoin and Ether alongside select stablecoin services. The Federal Bureau of Investigation identified the attackers as a group tracked under the name TraderTraitor, warning that stolen funds are likely to be laundered through decentralised finance platforms.

Why it matters

The incident represents the largest cryptocurrency theft on record, impacting global exchange security protocols and forcing major platforms to reassess asset protection and regulatory compliance.
