Biju Janata Dal (BJD) filed a petition with the Chief Electoral Officer on 19 August 2026, asking for a 30‑day extension of the claims and objections period under the State Electoral Information and Registration (SIR) 2026. The period had been initially set to end 4 August, was already extended by the Election Commission of India to 19 August, and BJD wants it stretched further due to ongoing floods. The party cited heavy rainfall, waterlogging, disrupted road communication, and displacement of families in many districts, arguing that electors, Booth Level Agents and election officials cannot complete verification and submissions by the current deadline. BJD emphasized that the claims and objections stage safeguards against wrongful exclusion of eligible voters from the electoral roll. The request is directed at the CEO of Odisha as a response to the current natural calamity impacting electoral procedures.
