BJP Allies Caution on Amit Shah’s UCC Timeline Amid State-Level Push

Three BJP allies—Telugu Desam Party (TDP), JD(U), and Lok Janshakti Party (Ram Vilas)—have expressed caution over Union Home Minister Amit Shah’s claim that 21 NDA-governed states will implement the Uniform Civil Code (UCC) by 2029. TDP’s parliamentary leader Lavu Sri Krishna Devarayalu stated that Andhra Pradesh will only consider UCC after stakeholder consultations, while JD(U) working president Sanjay Jha said the party will discuss the matter with Shah. JD(U) chief Nitish Kumar, who previously supported UCC, now insists on consensus-building. Chirag Paswan of LJP emphasized the need for public consultation and transparency, citing constitutional exemptions for Scheduled Tribes. Shah had earlier asserted that triple talaq has been abolished and UCC is already in place in some states, with full rollout planned in NDA-governed states by 2029.
