BJP Allies Demand EC Clarify SIR Disputes to Dispel Public Misgivings

BJP allies including Chirag Paswan of LJP (RV), Lavu Srikrishna Devarayalu of TDP, and Upendra Kushwaha of RLM urged the Election Commission to clarify differences over Special Intensive Revision of electoral rolls. The Indian Express reported on September 23 that EC members Sukhbir Singh Sandhu and Vivek Joshi had objected at least 14 times in 10 months to SIR decisions taken without their knowledge. Paswan stated that if people doubt the electoral process, it is problematic and the CEC must present his stance clearly to the public. TDP’s Devarayalu said SIR was conducted transparently in Andhra Pradesh but emphasized that clarification would strengthen public confidence in the EC. RLM chief Kushwaha said there is surely an issue with the EC’s functioning and that it must clarify its position. The statements came as the Opposition sought answers on the rift within the Election Commission.
