BJP Hits Back at Congress After Kharge Criticizes Leadership

· India · The Hindu, Times of India

Union Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan stated in New Delhi that Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge's labeling of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Home Minister Amit Shah as illegal constitutes an insult to constitutional institutions and the public mandate. The remarks followed Mr. Kharge's call for the dissolution of the Lok Sabha and State Assemblies, alongside plans for the opposition to agitate using ballot papers instead of Electronic Voting Machines. Mr. Chouhan accused the Congress leadership of frustration following electoral defeats and defended the 2023 legislation governing the appointment of Election Commissioners. The BJP leader further noted that the opposition party did not raise objections to EVMs when it secured victories in states such as Karnataka, Telangana, and Himachal Pradesh.

Why it matters

The clash underscores deepening political friction between the ruling BJP and the opposition Congress over the credibility of India's electoral machinery and constitutional offices.
