BJP Nominates Former IAS Officer Devasish Sharma for Nagaon Byelection
· India · The Hindu, Hindustan Times
The Bharatiya Janata Party has named former IAS officer Devasish Sharma as its candidate for the Nagaon Lok Sabha byelection scheduled for October 6, 2026. Sharma previously served as the Nagaon District Commissioner until he opted for voluntary retirement on September 3, 2026, and joined the party on September 8. The seat became vacant after incumbent Congress MP Pradyut Bordoloi resigned to join the BJP and contest an Assembly seat. The Election Commission of India is currently reviewing a complaint filed by Congress leader Rakibul Hussain regarding alleged financial irregularities during Sharma's tenure as District Commissioner. The BJP maintains that the nomination is valid as the government approved Sharma's retirement before he joined the party.
Why it matters
The nomination has sparked a political controversy over the neutrality of bureaucrats, with the Congress party alleging that Sharma's transition from a district election official to a candidate constitutes fraud.
