BJP Slams Tamil Nadu Government Over Parole to Coimbatore Blast Convicts
· India · Indian Express, Hindustan Times
The Tamil Nadu government has granted a 60-day parole to five convicts serving life sentences for the 1998 Coimbatore serial bombings. The convicts—Mohammed Ansari, Mohammed Ali, Monappa alias Mohammed Hassan, Mohammed Ajam, and Nawab Khan—petitions were cleared citing personal and health conditions. The 1998 blasts, which targeted BJP leader L K Advani, left 58 people dead and over 200 injured across Coimbatore. The BJP has strongly criticised the TVK government led by Vijay, accusing it of minority appeasement and selective softness toward terrorists to secure the IUML's political support. In response, government representatives defended the decision as a regular administrative process given the long prison tenure of the convicts.
Why it matters
The decision has reignited political tensions in Tamil Nadu over the handling of terrorism cases and raised questions about shifting political alliances involving the ruling party and the IUML.
