BJP to Launch Nationwide Campaign Against UDF Govt in Keralam Over Vande Mataram Row
· India · The Hindu, Times of India, News18
The BJP will launch a nationwide campaign against the V.D. Satheesan-led government in Keralam, accusing it of taking an anti-national stance by omitting the national song during Independence Day celebrations. M.T. Ramesh, the State general secretary of the BJP, alleged that the State government succumbed to pressure from the Indian Union Muslim League, Jamaat-e-Islami, and other religious groups. Vande Mataram was left out entirely from the official State-level celebrations at Central Stadium in Thiruvananthapuram on Saturday, where Chief Minister V.D. Satheesan hoisted the national flag. The BJP is also considering legal measures, arguing that the omission violates a parliamentary legislation requiring the national song to be rendered alongside the national anthem at official functions. While the Central government had forwarded a circular mandating the full version of Vande Mataram, a preceding State circular specified only the national anthem.
Why it matters
The dispute escalates political tensions between the BJP and the ruling UDF government in Keralam over cultural protocols at official state functions.
