BMC Approves Converting Mumbai Football Ground into Convention Centre

· India · Sportstar, Indian Express, The Hindu

The general body of the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation in Mumbai has approved changing the land reservation of the Neville D’Souza football ground in Bandra to create a convention and exhibition centre. The 8,450-square-metre ground features FIFA-standard artificial turf and serves 300 to 400 clubs and 8,000 sport students daily. Despite protests from players, parents, and coaches on June 28, the municipal corporation recommended amending the Development Plan 2034 and authorized the commissioner to seek final approval from the Maharashtra Government's Urban Development Department. The land was originally reserved for a convention complex under the 1983 Bandra Reclamation layout plan.

Why it matters

The decision eliminates a major training facility used by thousands of young athletes and local clubs in Mumbai, sparking sharp criticism over vanishing open spaces.
