BMC auctions Imperial Grand Palace Hotel to recover Rs 41.52 crore tax dues
· Business · Indian Express, Times of India
The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has put the Imperial Grand Palace Hotel in Aarey Forest up for auction to recover pending tax dues of Rs 41.52 crore. This marks the first time since 1984 that the civic body has auctioned attached properties for tax recovery. The hotel, part of the contentious Royal Palms project, lies unused and dilapidated, with its last recorded conference held in 2012. BMC will auction two additional commercial properties — one in Malad (Kurar) for Rs 3.46 crore and another in Bandra for Rs 30.6 crore — to recover a total of Rs 74.98 crore in dues.
Why it matters
The auction affects the hotel's proprietors who failed to pay pending dues despite multiple notices, and signals the BMC's strengthened enforcement to recover long-pending municipal tax arrears from high-value commercial properties.
