BNP Leader Mirza Fakhrul Alamgir Elected 23rd President of Bangladesh
· World · Times of India, The Hindu, LiveMint
Bangladesh has elected senior Bangladesh Nationalist Party leader Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir as its 23rd president, marking a significant shift for a politician who recently held top organizational posts. Alamgir secured 255 votes in Thursday's presidential election at the Jatiya Sangsad in Dhaka, defeating opposition candidate Oli Ahmed, who received 88 votes. The election marked the first time in 35 years that more than one candidate contested the country's presidential poll. Alamgir resigned from his positions as BNP Secretary General and National Standing Committee member following his nomination last week. The election was called after former President Mohammed Shahabuddin resigned on July 24, citing health problems.
Why it matters
The election brings a senior opposition figure to Bangladesh's presidency amid a political transition under Prime Minister Tarique Rahman.
