Board of Peace Envoy Criticises Israel and Hamas
· World · BBC News
Nickolay Mladenov, an envoy for the US President's Board of Peace, has criticised both Israel's ongoing air strikes in Gaza and the continued military activities of Hamas. Mladenov warned the UN Security Council that the potential collapse of the October ceasefire would mark a point of no return for the region. While Israel has rejected a 15-point roadmap for Hamas's disarmament, Mladenov noted that committees are working to resolve outstanding questions. According to the Hamas-run health ministry, at least 1,303 Palestinians have been killed since the ceasefire began, while the Israeli military reports four soldier deaths in the same period. Mladenov emphasised that the proposed roadmap requires sequenced and reciprocal actions from both parties.
Why it matters
The impasse over the disarmament roadmap threatens to derail the ceasefire, potentially leading to a full-scale resumption of hostilities in Gaza.
