Bombay HC Bans Firecrackers Across Maharashtra Festivals

The Bombay High Court has banned firecrackers on public roads across Maharashtra during festivals, including day and night celebrations. Justices Girish Kulkarni and Neela Gokhale also prohibited loudspeakers, DJs, laser beams, high-intensity lumen lights and beams during religious processions. The bench took suo motu cognizance of severe noise and air pollution and said celebrations must not affect people's health. Organisers must install visible decibel meters, submit affidavits confirming internal volume limiters, and deposit ₹1 lakh for groups or ₹50,000 for individuals. The deposit will be forfeited for exceeding permitted decibel limits, while authorities must seize violating sound systems and record noise levels with organiser representatives.
Why it matters
Festival organisers, processions and residents in Maharashtra will face stricter controls on noise, light and firecrackers. Mumbai residents will no longer face road-level firecracker pollution during public celebrations.
