· India · Hindustan Times, Indian Express, The Hindu
The Bombay High Court at Goa has cancelled the bail previously granted to Saurav Luthra, Gaurav Luthra, and Ajay Gupta, the owners of the illegal Birch by Romeo Lane nightclub in Arpora. The trio were initially granted bail in April following a fire at the venue that resulted in 25 deaths. The court has ordered them to surrender within two weeks, though they retain the right to re-apply for bail before the trial court. The charges against them include culpable homicide and criminal conspiracy under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita. A second FIR remains active against the accused, alleging fabrication of documents to obtain operating permissions.
Why it matters
The court's decision holds the nightclub owners accountable for gross criminal negligence and safety failures that led to a mass casualty event in North Goa.
