Bombay HC Refuses Relief To Thane Restaurant Over Banned Analog Paneer

· India · Indian Express, India Today

The Bombay High Court refused immediate relief to Udupi Swaad Restaurant in Thane's Wagle Estate after the Maharashtra Food and Drug Administration suspended its food license for using banned analog paneer. A bench of Acting Chief Justice Ravindra V Ghuge and Justice Gautam A Ankhad stated that the restaurant needed to suffer for making customers consume synthetic paneer. The FDA took action following a June report that declared the restaurant's paneer sample unsafe and substandard. The restaurant argued that the closure caused severe revenue, livelihood, and reputation losses because authorities failed to issue a mandatory improvement notice under Section 32 of the Food Safety and Standards Act. However, the court questioned why the eatery failed to inform customers on menus or signboards that it served artificial substitutes rather than dairy paneer.

Why it matters

The court's strict stance signals heightened judicial support for food safety crackdowns against eateries serving adulterated dairy products across Maharashtra.
