The Bombay High Court has imposed a total ban on bursting firecrackers on public streets across Maharashtra to curb noise and air pollution. Justices Girish S Kulkarni and Neela K Gokhale issued the order following a suo motu PIL addressing the use of high-watt speakers and firecrackers during festivities. The court expressed concern over the cumulative health impact of pollution and the danger posed to pedestrians and traffic. It further directed that firecracker use in private spaces must remain within strict decibel limits. The bench also praised police commissioners in Nagpur, Pune, and Solapur for taking steps to restrain activities that infringe on public rights.
