Bombay High Court Disposes Of Cab Drivers Plea Over Marathi Language Rule

The Bombay high court disposed of a petition challenging Maharashtra's mandatory Marathi language requirement for auto-rickshaw and taxi drivers after the state government granted a one-year extension. Additional government pleader Jyoti Chavan informed a bench comprising acting Chief Justice Ravindra Ghuge and Justice Gautam Ankhad of the decision on Saturday. Chief minister Devendra Fadnavis announced the extension following a meeting with a delegation of drivers on Thursday. Four cab drivers had filed a public interest litigation through advocate Vivek Shukla, arguing that the August 12 notification violated Articles 14, 19, and 21 of the Constitution and exceeded powers under the Motor Vehicles Act. The extension puts immediate punitive action on hold, giving drivers time to acquire working knowledge of Marathi.
