Bombay High Court Urges Strict Anti-Littering Laws for Mumbai and Pune

The Bombay High Court has directed the Maharashtra government to formulate a state-wide anti-littering policy modelled after Singapore's strict regulations. Pulling up the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation for false assurances, a bench of Justices Girish S Kulkarni and Neela K Gokhale warned of contempt proceedings against errant ward officers. The court noted that municipal machinery remained completely inactive despite rampant garbage dumping on streets and beaches across areas such as Dadar, Andheri, and Goregaon. Citing the Kanjurmarg landfill site, the judges questioned how many prosecutions were launched against unruly citizens causing public nuisances. The civic body has been ordered to submit an affidavit with a list of responsible ward officers and standard operating procedures for cleanliness drives.
