Boris Johnson Urges India-US-UK Coordination on Iran and Ukraine
· World · Times of India, LiveMint
Former British Prime Minister Boris Johnson called the US war on Iran a "mistake" and urged India, the US and Britain to coordinate on ending the conflict and reopening the Strait of Hormuz. Speaking at the Economic Times World Leaders Forum in New Delhi, Johnson said it was "totally deranged" to believe regime change in Iran could be achieved through air strikes and that change must come from within. He advised the US not to have walked into an "obvious trap" without consulting allies, and suggested the trio should also pressure Russia to end the Ukraine war. Johnson predicted Putin is fated to lose in Ukraine and backed providing Tomahawk missiles and freezing $140 billion of Putin's cash held in Brussels. He praised India's democratic trajectory and hailed the India-UK FTA, calling for deeper India-US and India-UK military cooperation. Johnson noted Trump was consultative and receptive to advice from friends including Modi.
Why it matters
Johnson's appeal puts pressure on India to balance its strategic ties with Russia over Ukraine while coordinating with the US and UK on Iran, where energy security and maritime trade through the Strait of Hormuz directly affect India's oil imports and economy. His comments come as New Delhi navigates delicate diplomatic positions on both conflicts with significant economic and security implications.
