Sugar shipments from Brazil are expected to reach India before October 15 following the central government's decision to permit duty-free imports. The National Federation of Cooperative Sugar Factories stated that Brazil remains the primary viable sourcing option due to supply shortfalls in Thailand. Union Consumer Affairs Minister Pralhad Joshi attributed the domestic output decline to an unexpected outbreak of red rot disease and El Niño weather conditions. While India maintains an overall annual surplus, the imports are intended as a temporary buffer ahead of the festival season. Port congestion in Brazil and transit timelines mean the exact volume arriving by mid-October remains uncertain.
