Over two decades, BRICS has evolved from a loose grouping of five emerging economies into a major organization representing the Global South, backed by leaders including Narendra Modi, Xi Jinping, and Vladimir Putin. The bloc encompasses diverse political systems and economies, with China's nominal GDP reaching about $20 trillion in 2025 compared to roughly $14 trillion for the other ten BRICS states combined. Traditional global governance institutions like the United Nations, WTO, World Bank, and IMF face growing criticism from emerging states for failing to adequately address sovereign security and economic expectations. BRICS positions itself as a reformist, pluralist, and non-Western organization rather than an anti-Western bloc.
