BRICS Summit 2026: Who’s attending, why it matters and India’s role?

India is hosting the 18th BRICS Summit on 12–13 September 2026 at Bharat Mandapam in New Delhi, marking twenty years since the bloc's establishment in 2006. India assumed its fourth BRICS Chairship on January 1, 2026, guiding the year's agenda under the theme “Building for Resilience, Innovation, Cooperation and Sustainability.” The two-day Summit brings together leaders of BRICS member and partner countries alongside outreach invitees to discuss intra-BRICS cooperation and global matters of mutual importance. Ahead of the leaders' gathering, Mumbai will host a final meeting of BRICS Finance Ministers and Central Bank Governors on September 9-10. The expanded grouping now comprises eleven emerging economies, representing approximately 49% of the world's population, 39% of global GDP, and 23% of international trade.
Why it matters
As the host and current chair, India sets the strategic agenda for BRICS discussions on trade, resilience, and sustainability, shaping plurilateral diplomatic engagement among major emerging economies.
