British Hindu Boy's Father Sues London School Over Tilak Ban
· World · Times of India, NDTV
The father of a nine-year-old British Indian boy is suing Vicar's Green Primary School in Alperton, London, in the High Court for unlawful religious discrimination and harassment. The lawsuit alleges that staff prohibited the child from wearing a tilak-chandlo on his forehead as a manifestation of his Hindu Swaminarayan faith. Funded by the UK Hindu network Action for Harmony, the father is seeking 25,000 pounds in damages and claims breaches of equality duties and ECHR rights. The school disputes the claims, arguing that the prohibition did not prevent the child from practising Hinduism and citing concerns over pupil cohesiveness. The pupil was withdrawn from the school in January 2026 after authorities issued a new uniform policy barring religious symbols.
Why it matters
The case tests the legal boundaries of religious freedom and uniform policies in British state schools, setting a significant precedent for Hindu students expressing their faith.
