British Indian Couple Fight US Extradition Over Cancer Drug Fraud
· World · Times of India, Hindustan Times
British Indian businessman Sukhjit Singh Ghuman and his ex-wife Kiranjit Ghuman appeared at Westminster magistrates' court in London last week to contest their extradition to the US. The pair face charges of smuggling unapproved and expired foreign medical drugs from India into the US and administering them to cancer patients at their clinics in California and Arizona between 2019 and 2023. Prosecutors allege the clinics billed Medicare and other insurers for expensive FDA-approved drugs while using cheaper alternatives, pocketing the difference. Defence lawyers argued against extradition by citing severe health risks, depression, and poor conditions in US prisons. Legal representatives for the US government maintained that American authorities take prisoner care seriously and that extradition proceedings should proceed.
