Buddha relics enshrined in 108 chortens to mark Gelephu Mindfulness City foundation
· World · The Hindu
Indian-origin Buddha relics will be enshrined in 108 jangchub chortens simultaneously built along a 12 km stretch of the Mau Chhu River in Gelephu, Bhutan, on Sunday (November 1, 2026). The event marks the spiritual foundation of Gelephu Mindfulness City, Bhutan's King Jigme Khesar Namgyel Wangchuk's envisioned spirituality-driven global economic hub. About 240 km south-southeast of Thimphu, the city borders Assam's Chirang district in India. The Central Monastic Body of Bhutan stated that relics were donated by Buddhists across Malaysia, Singapore, Taiwan, Thailand, and Bhutan, with most sourced from India. The 'zung', containing relics, thangkhas, statues, and mantra scrolls, renders the chorten equivalent to the living Buddha once consecrated.
Why it matters
The consecration of 108 relic chortens near the India-Bhutan border solidifies Gelephu Mindfulness City's status as a cross-border spiritual and economic initiative, directly involving Indian-origin relics and the region's Buddhist communities.
