The sacred Piprahwa relics from Uttar Pradesh's Kapilavastu archaeological site will be on public display in Arunachal Pradesh for a month, starting today, October 31, 2026, and ending November 21. The exhibition will feature at Tawang Monastery from November 1 to 7, TGL Monastery in Bomdila from November 8 to 13, and the Golden Pagoda in Namsai from November 14 to 20. Union culture and tourism minister Gajendra Singh Shekhawat will attend the inaugural ceremony at Tawang Monastery, with chief minister Pema Khandu also present for a special program on November 1. Special IAF aircraft and helicopters will transport the relics under arrangements by the culture, defence ministries and Arunachal Pradesh government, coinciding with the Tibetan Buddhist festival Lhabab Düchen. An international conference on 'Buddhism: Dissemination in the Himalayan Region and Beyond' will be held at Tawang's Kalawangpo Convention Hall on November 2.
Why it matters
This allows devotees across Arunachal Pradesh and beyond to pay homage to the Buddha's relics for the first time in over a century, following their return to India in 2025 after nearly 127 years abroad.
