Bulgaria investigates fire-related explosions at EMCO ammunition storage site
· World · BBC News, Reuters
Bulgarian authorities are investigating an overnight fire and explosions at an ammunition storage facility near Gorni Varpishta. Private way company EMCO stated the incident was an act of sabotage, ruling out human error as the cause. This blast follows a similar fire at another EMCO warehouse in the same area last month. The facility had been unused for months and had passed a full regulatory inspection just 20 days prior. Interior Minister Ivan Demerdzhiev confirmed that investigators are not ruling out outside interference. No injuries were reported during the blaze or explosions.
Why it matters
Bulgaria is a major weapons supplier to Ukraine, and repeated attacks on its defence infrastructure suggest a growing campaign of targeted sabotage in the region.
