Cabinet Extends Fast Track Special Courts Scheme Until March 2031

· India · The Hindu, Hindustan Times

The Union Cabinet approved a five-year extension on Wednesday for the Centrally Sponsored Scheme for Fast Track Special Courts, continuing operations from April 2026 to March 31, 2031. The extended scheme carries a total financial outlay of ₹3,788.04 crore, with a Central share of ₹2,353.15 crore funded through the Nirbhaya Fund and a State/Union Territory share of ₹1,434.89 crore. The government plans to operationalise 850 fast-track courts, including exclusive POCSO courts, across participating States and Union Territories based on case pendency data. Since the inception of the central scheme in October 2019, these courts have disposed of 4,02,457 cases related to rape and offences under the POCSO Act.

Why it matters

The extension directly impacts judicial infrastructure across India by aiming to reduce the massive backlog of rape and child sexual abuse cases through dedicated judicial officers and specialised support staff.
