Caf President Rules Out Postponement for 2027 Africa Cup of Nations

· Sports · BBC Sport

Confederation of African Football president Patrice Motsepe has confirmed that the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations will proceed as scheduled, despite concerns over infrastructure readiness in co-hosts Kenya, Tanzania, and Uganda. Motsepe, who recently inspected venues in Nairobi, demanded a heightened sense of urgency to ensure stadiums are ready for testing by January. While acknowledging progress, he noted that facilities including Kasarani Stadium still require significant work on playing surfaces, floodlights, and broadcast infrastructure. The tournament is set to return to East Africa for the first time in 51 years, with the opening match slated for 19 June 2027. Organisers must also reconfigure stadium designs to accommodate security requirements for visiting heads of state and VIPs.

Why it matters

The tournament's success is a major infrastructure test for Kenya, which is also preparing to host the 2029 World Athletics Championships at the same venues. Failure to meet these deadlines could jeopardise the country's reputation as a host for future international sporting events.
