CAF Reverses Decision to Make AFCON Every Four Years
· Sports · Sportstar, Al Jazeera, BBC Sport
The Confederation of African Football Executive Committee has unanimously decided that the Africa Cup of Nations will return to taking place every two years. Last December, CAF had planned to transition the continental competition into a quadrennial tournament as part of a proposal to establish a CAF Nations League. However, CAF President Patrice Motsepe noted that the proposed Nations League would take years to generate sufficient revenue to sustain African football. The reinstated biennial schedule aims to protect the interests of African football, its 54 member associations, and players competing for overseas clubs. Under the updated calendar, Kenya, Tanzania, and Uganda will co-host the tournament in 2027, with subsequent editions scheduled for 2028, 2031, and 2033.
Why it matters
The decision preserves the frequency of Africa's premier football tournament, ensuring consistent competitive opportunities and revenue for the 54 member associations and African players abroad.
