Calcutta High Court Criticises EC Over Envelope Symbol Allotment to TMC Rebels

The Calcutta High Court on Thursday criticised the Election Commission of India for allotting the Indian Secular Front’s envelope symbol to Trinamool Congress rebels for the upcoming Assembly bypolls in West Bengal. Justice Krishna Rao questioned why the EC chose the envelope symbol when 183 other symbols were available, stating authorities were “always creating trouble once the election starts.” Senior advocate Bikash Ranjan Bhattacharya, appearing for the ISF, said the symbol should be frozen to avoid voter confusion. The court also noted no notification was issued about the symbol allotment and asked the TMC rebel faction’s counsel what interest they had in the envelope symbol.
