Calicut University Introduces Separate Research Scholars Union and Campus Student Bodies
· India · The Hindu, Hindustan Times
The University of Calicut Syndicate approved proposals from a five-member committee to overhaul campus election rules and union structures in Kozhikode. Research scholars registered under the university will now form a dedicated Calicut University Research Scholars Union, replacing the existing Department Students Union on the main campus. Separate Campus Students Unions will be established for regional centres in Thrissur and Wayanad, while college principals can choose between presidential and parliamentary election formats. The new rules mandate CCTV cameras, faculty observers, a maximum age limit of 25 for regular students and 28 for researchers, and at least 75 percent attendance for contestants. The reforms also ban political party funding, outsider campaigning, and campus entry for those facing disciplinary action.
Why it matters
These sweeping reforms aim to curb election-related campus violence and enforce strict academic eligibility criteria for student political leaders in Kerala.
