Calicut University Suspends Classes After Student Clashes Injure 30
· India · The Hindu, India Today
Calicut University authorities suspended classes and directed undergraduate and postgraduate students to vacate hostels on its main campus in Tenhipalam, Malappuram district. Around 30 students sustained injuries after activists from the Students' Federation of India and the United Democratic Students' Front clashed and threw stones during vote counting for the campus students' union polls. The violence erupted after SFI members objected to the presence of two MSF activists near their election committee office, resulting in damaged property and destroyed motorcycles. Police intervened to bring the situation under control and segregated the rival groups. Despite the violence, the SFI retained control of the students' union by winning all nine general seats in the first election conducted under revamped rules.
Why it matters
