Cambodia, US to Resume Angkor Sentinel Drills in February 2027
· World · The Independent, Hindustan Times
Cambodia's Royal Cambodian Army announced on Friday that joint military exercises with the United States, suspended since 2017, will resume in February 2027 under the name Exercise Angkor Sentinel 2027. The decision follows meetings in August between Prime Minister Hun Manet and US Under Secretary for Policy Elbridge Colby, plus talks between US Pacific Fleet commander Adm. Steve Koehler and Cambodian Armed Forces chief Gen. Vong Pisen. A bilateral maritime exercise also suspended in 2017 is set to restart.
Why it matters
The drills mark a thaw in Cambodia-US defence ties, partially driven by Washington's concerns over China's military presence at a Cambodian Gulf of Thailand naval base, and shift the Indo-Pacific strategic balance away from sole Chinese influence in Phnom Penh.
