Can dogs sniff cancer? AI joins the hunt in India

Bengaluru-based startup Dognosis is training rescue dogs to detect cancer and other human illnesses using a combination of their extraordinary sense of smell and AI data analysis. Clad in customized 3D-printed helmets and sensors, dogs like a Labrador mix named Chloe evaluate human breath samples collected in cotton masks. The startup turns the dogs' brain activity, respiration, and body language into data to identify distinctive odours released by diseases. Dognosis co-founder Akash Kulgod stated that the dogs can perform thousands of sniffs in an hour, potentially offering an easy and affordable first layer of screening. Backed by venture capital firms including Accel India, the startup is collaborating with government medical institutions and aims for commercial launch next year.
Why it matters
Early detection significantly improves cancer survival rates, but many Indian patients are diagnosed only after the disease has advanced. Dognosis aims to provide an affordable, non-invasive mass-screening tool that could bridge this healthcare gap.
