Can’t occupy protest site for all times to come: Supreme Court
· India · Indian Express, Bar and Bench, Deccan Herald
The Supreme Court ruled on Tuesday that protesters cannot occupy Jantar Mantar for all times to come, stating that a designated site must be used only for an identified period. This decision follows the Delhi Police's October 12 notification designating Jantar Mantar as a protest site and identifying Ramlila Maidan, Burari Ground and CBD Ground as alternative venues. Senior Advocate Mukul Rohatgi, representing Delhi's trading associations, argued that the ongoing protests have severely impacted traders during the festive season, causing losses of thousands of crores and leaving shops closed. The Court also announced it will examine whether Delhi Police surveillance during the protests amounted to negative state interference.
Why it matters
Traders face severe financial losses and business disruption during the festive season due to the protests, with thousands of crores in damages reported.
