Canada and EU Launch Alliance for the Future

· World · The Guardian, LiveMint

Canada and the European Union have formed the Alliance for the Future, a new partnership unveiled at a summit in Montreal. The agreement includes a Canadian contribution to a €90bn support loan for Ukraine and plans for a more integrated market. The alliance aims to reduce reliance on American companies for defense and technology, following recent disruptions to satellite services in Ukraine. As part of this shift, Canada is investing up to C$1.6bn in the AI company Cohere, which is merging with Germany's Aleph Alpha. Canada will also join the European supercomputing network under the new pact.

Why it matters

The alliance signals a strategic pivot by Canada to reduce its dependence on US-based technology and defense infrastructure, potentially reshaping trade and security ties between North America and Europe.
