Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney has welcomed the European Union's proposal to make Ottawa an associate member of the bloc. Speaking to EU lawmakers in Strasbourg, France, Carney warned that economic integration and supply chains are being weaponized through tariffs. The remarks follow US President Donald Trump calling the prospect of Canada becoming an EU associate member laughable and threatening heavy tariffs on Europe. European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen stated the bloc wants to bring its relationship with Canada to the highest level possible. Associate membership does not currently exist under EU treaties and would require creation and ratification by member states.
