Canva releases its first image generation model

· Technology · TechCrunch, The Decoder

Canva released its first in-house image generation model, Canva Craft, developed by its research team to compete with Google, OpenAI, ByteDance, and Meta. The model operates in two stages: first interpreting prompts to plan spatial relationships and text details, then generating up to 2K resolution images across 30 aspect ratios. Canva trained the model using its own library of human-designed templates rather than photographs, enabling layered edits via Magic and legible text output. The model is available across Canva's platform, API, and through integration with third-party chatbots like ChatGPT and Gemini. Canva's revenue was on track for $4 billion last year, but the company recently cut its 2026 growth forecast, reportedly lowering its valuation from $42 billion to $35 billion.

Why it matters

The launch positions Canva to reduce API costs while offering creators better quality and speed control for design workflows, directly impacting the 60 million monthly users on its platform and challenging dominant players in the generative AI image space.
