Carlsen, Giri, Vidit, Humpy, Divya Unite for APL Pipers in GCL Season 4
· Sports · Times of India, Indian Express
Defending champions Alpine APL Pipers have assembled Magnus Carlsen, Anish Giri, Vidit Gujrathi, Koneru Humpy, Divya Deshmukh and Volodar Murzin for the Global Chess League (GCL) Season 4 in Bengaluru, starting this Saturday. Carlsen, the World No. 1, returns to lead the franchise after skipping the previous edition, joining positional specialists Giri and Vidit alongside veteran Humpy, FIDE Women's World Cup winner Divya and former World Rapid Champion Murzin on the prodigy board. Coach Pravin Thipsay told TimesofIndia.com that building the roster under the league's identical-purse draft system required balancing squad strength across the double round-robin qualifiers and the subsequent one-on-one knockout phase. Every franchise begins with the same draft-point bank, and securing an Icon-board player like Carlsen forces immediate trade-offs on the Superstar and Prodigy boards.
Why it matters
Three of India's top-ranked players — Vidit, Humpy and Divya — feature for the defending champions, giving Indian chess fans direct rooting interest in a stacked franchise headlined by the world's top-rated player. The Pipers' draft economics show how GCL teams must weigh marquee Icon-board acquisitions against depth on the Prodigy and Superstar boards in a double round-robin format.
