Casio Launches $80,000 Blue Sapphire G-Shock in Limited Edition of 20
· Technology · Wired, GQ
Casio has announced a three-watch collection featuring blue sapphire crystal, anchored by the flagship MRG-D5000 priced at $80,000. Only 20 units of the full-sapphire timepiece will be manufactured, placing the rugged watch in the price tier of luxury brands like Patek Philippe. The collection, dubbed the 'Blue Rose Project', also includes the $9,500 MRG-B5000SA-2 and the $850 GMW-B5000SB-1A. Unlike 2017 sapphire prototypes that required metal bracing, the new model uses a re-engineered 'Multi-Guard Structure' inspired by traditional Japanese timber-frame techniques. This design divides the outer case into multiple interlocking components to disperse impact and meet standard G-Shock shock-resistance criteria.
Why it matters
This release marks a rare venture for Casio into ultra-luxury pricing, transforming a brand known for accessible durability into a maker of five-figure collector items.
