Industrial giant Caterpillar is expanding its AI capabilities by applying lessons learned from decades of automating mining operations to broader construction and manufacturing environments. The company currently manages 1.6 million connected assets globally, utilizing over 16 petabytes of structured data to power its autonomous systems and software tools. Among its new applications is the Cat AI Assistant, a voice-command tool that helps field technicians access repair procedures and troubleshoot machinery in real-time. Beyond physical equipment, Caterpillar is also deploying AI agents to modernize legacy code and identify software defects during development.
