CBI Supports Moving Twisha Sharma Trial to Delhi Citing Influence by Accused
· India · Hindustan Times, Live Law
The Central Bureau of Investigation has told the Supreme Court that the trial in the Twisha Sharma case should be moved out of Madhya Pradesh because the accused wield "unwarranted" influence in Bhopal. The agency said Twisha's mother-in-law, former district court judge Giribala Singh, and her son Samarth Singh are influential persons who could intimidate witnesses and sway proceedings. Twisha's father had petitioned for the trial to be held in Delhi citing the same risk. The apex court stayed the trial and sought responses from the accused and the CBI. A bench comprising Chief Justice Surya Kant and Justices Joymalya Bagchi and V Mohana adjourned the matter after a request from senior advocate Siddharth Dave representing the accused. The next hearing is scheduled after a week.
Why it matters
The Supreme Court's decision will determine whether a case involving a former judge's family can proceed fairly in Bhopal or requires a neutral venue to protect witnesses and ensure impartiality.
