CBIC Accuses Subhash Chandra Garg of Cherry Picking GST Growth Data

The Central Board of Indirect Taxes and Customs (CBIC) rejected claims by former finance secretary Subhash Chandra Garg that GST collection figures are overstated. Garg had questioned the reported 14.8% growth in August collections and the 11% growth over the first five months by excluding compensation cess. He argued that including the cess would reduce the five-month gross growth to 4.08% and net growth to 1.30%. The CBIC responded that compensation cess ended on February 1, 2024, and including it in current comparisons would be misleading.
