CBSE clarifies 2028 Class 10 scheme: five compulsory subjects with optional skill paper as safety net

· Business · The Hindu, Indian Express

The CBSE on October 29, 2026, announced that Class 10 board exams in 2028 will feature five compulsory subjects with an optional skill paper students may take to clear the examination even if they fail mathematics, science, or social science. The clarification applies specifically to students currently in Class 9 during 2026-27, who will appear for their board exams in 2028, and does not affect the current Class 10 batch. Interdisciplinary area, CT, and AI modules will not be included in the Scheme of Studies for these batches. Vocational education remains compulsory, with students able to opt for 'Kaushal Vikas' or any of 22 skill subjects notified by the Board, with school-based assessment or board examination pathways.

Why it matters

Students in Class 9 in 2026-27 gain a safety net: if they fail core subjects, the optional skill paper allows them to clear Class 10 board exams, directly affecting their academic progression.
