CBSE rejects Class 6 exemption from 3-language rule, SC suggests 2027 start

The CBSE told the Supreme Court it cannot grant a one-time exemption from its three-language requirement for current Class 6 students, citing risks of learning gaps and disruption to the National Education Policy 2020 framework. The Supreme Court, led by Chief Justice Surya Kant, suggested mandatory implementation begin from January 2027 instead, while allowing the current batch to voluntarily study the third language in the interim. The court emphasized the need to give students, families, and schools time to adjust to the policy, which was conceived in 2020 but only brought into effect in early 2026.
