CCPA Fines E-Commerce Platform Rs 5 Lakh Over Sub-Standard Toys
· India · Indian Express, Moneycontrol
The Central Consumer Protection Authority has fined an e-commerce platform Rs 5 lakh for listing toys that failed mandatory Bureau of Indian Standards quality checks. Chief Commissioner Nidhi Khare and Commissioner Anupam Mishra stated that technologically advanced platforms must use adequate tools to prevent the sale of regulated products. The platform defended itself by arguing it is legally exempted from liability for third-party listings. The authority rejected this defense, noting that the platform failed to ensure compliance with the Toys Quality Control Order.
Why it matters
The penalty reinforces strict regulatory oversight on digital marketplaces to protect children from hazardous toys.
