CCPA Fines Sunrise Foods ₹1 Lakh Over Misleading Whole Wheat Bread Claim
· Business · Hindustan Times, Times of India
The Central Consumer Protection Authority has imposed a penalty of ₹1 lakh on Sunrise Foods for marketing its Everyday bread as 100% whole wheat despite containing only 64% whole wheat. The regulator directed the company to immediately discontinue the misleading advertisement across all print, electronic, and social media platforms, and submit a compliance report within 15 days. Under FSSAI labelling regulations, bread marketed as whole wheat must meet a minimum threshold of 75% whole wheat flour content. The CCPA noted that the product failed to meet this threshold and lacked adequate disclosure of the proportion on the packaging. The proceedings followed a complaint by KMA Law Offices regarding systematic mislabelling by packaged bread manufacturers.
Why it matters
This penalty reinforces strict regulatory oversight on food labelling standards, protecting consumers from deceptive marketing practices by packaged food manufacturers.
