CCPA Slaps ₹10 Lakh Fine on Rapido for Misleading Tipping Prompts, Dark Patterns

· Business · Times of India, Hindustan Times, Zee News

The Central Consumer Protection Authority (CCPA) has imposed a ₹10 lakh penalty on Rapido for misleading advertisements and dark patterns that coerced riders into paying extra before ride confirmation. The regulator found Rapido displayed prompts like ‘Higher the price, higher the chance of getting a ride’ and ‘Captains aren’t accepting at ₹60—try adding +10, +20’ during booking, creating a false urgency. The CCPA ruled that tipping should not be a condition for ride confirmation and cited the 2025 Motor Vehicle Aggregator Guidelines, which prohibit such practices during booking. Earlier notices had been issued to Uber, Ola, Rapido, and Namma Yatri, but only Rapido faced immediate penalties. Investigations into Uber and Ola remain ongoing.

Why it matters

Consumers who use ride-hailing apps like Rapido will now face fewer deceptive practices, as the penalty signals stricter enforcement against manipulative pricing tactics. The ruling also sets a precedent for other aggregators, potentially leading to more transparent fare structures and reduced consumer exploitation during peak demand.
